Vietnamese prime minister orders rice export expansion
Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has issued a telegram asking relevant ministries and departments to boost rice production and expand rice exports.
Outbound rice sales in Vietnam remained limited though the nation's rice export in the first half of 2023 grew 22.2 percent in volume and 34.7 percent in value year on year, according to the telegram.
The prime minister urged drastic actions to build rice brands, improving the quality of rice and diversifying rice buyers to beef up the country’s rice exports.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development was told to create favorable conditions for farmers and farming firms to research and develop seeds for high quality, fruitful yields.
The prime minister also directed the ministry to optimize the Vietnamese rice brand in the global market, and suit Vietnamese standards on rice production and processing to international ones.
It is vital to develop farming infrastructure and further invest in some types of favored rice seeds, as well as apply modern technology to farming to reduce fertilizer, which helps ramp up output and rice quality.
Besides, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is in charge of diversifying and stabilizing rice buying markets, and regularly launching trade promotion activities in many nations, mainly the Philippines, China, Indonesia, and African countries, to popularize rice among foreign consumers.
The ministry was tasked with escalating the sales of fragrant rice and high-quality grains to some potential markets such as Europe, South Korea, the United States, and North America.
The prime minister wants relevant agencies to foster research on the global market and rice import demand, and keep information about rice trading and export activities updated.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is required to strengthen its role in connecting domestic rice exporters with foreign partners, promoting Vietnamese rice and supporting the signing of cooperation agreements.
Local authorities were assigned to encourage farmers to improve the quality of rice and food safety, while removing obstacles facing exporters.
